Amsterdam’s first shipment of coffee was from Yemen in 1663; a year later, the first koffiehuis “coffeehouse” in Amsterdam was opened. Known for serving “little gifts” of koekies to their guests, the cafes of Amsterdam continue to be the hub of social life, and cultural exchange.
